About the Project

Image showing rendering of a new administration building at the Lake Huron Water Treatment Plant.

The Lake Huron Water Treatment Plant’s main building, located north of Grand Bend, houses the administrative and staff spaces and process areas, was initially designed and constructed in the mid-1960s and has not undergone any major modifications since that time. Given both the age and configuration of this building, there are several challenges to modernizing staff facilities within the existing building to meet the utility’s current administrative and operational needs.

The Lake Huron Primary Water Supply System initiated a project to design and construct a new administration building at the treatment plant site. Also, as part of this project, various site modifications will be completed to integrate the new building, and selected portions of the existing main building are being renovated.

The utility has been working diligently with our retained consultant team to develop a design, which will achieve superior environmental and sustainability objectives and enhance the overall site.  This project will allow the utility to maintain effective levels of service both now and in the future.

Project Status

  • Detailed design continues to progress
  • Various site works will continue in advance of the new building construction, including:
    • New secondary gate on Waterworks Road
    • Relocation of security trailer (with electrical and communications)
    • Demolition of the existing garage building
    • Replacement of existing drain pipeline under the existing garage
  • Spring 2026 tender is planned, followed by construction

What to Expect During Construction

  • Waterworks Road will remain open to local traffic.
  • Increased traffic on Waterworks Road due to construction personnel and equipment.
  • The main access to the water treatment plant site for staff and visitors will temporarily shift to the new secondary gate on Waterworks Road.
  • Deliveries are expected to continue to be received through the existing main Waterworks Road gate whenever practical.
  • Construction areas will be delineated/fenced within the secure facility fenceline.
